Chronic Fatigue in TBI patients is linked with Vitamin D deficiency

Vitamin D, Chronic Fatigue and TBI

Traumatic Brain Injuries are very often followed by chronic fatigues. At the European Congress of Endocrinology, new evidences were presented to suggest that chronic fatigue in TBI patients can be associated with the deficiency of Vitamin D.Statistics show that about two-third post TBI patients suffer with chronic fatigue in later stages of their lives.

In the Netherlands, a team of researchers has studied about chronic fatigue and they have come up with the results that there is a possibility that it happens due to the deficiency of Vitamin D.

Dr. Jessica Schnieders of Rijnstate Hospital in the Netherlands led the team to conduct a deep research and analysis of hormone and Vitamin D levels in post-TBI patients. Ninety TBI patients were taken as subjects for this study. The researchers also monitored general aspects of the subjects like their emotional well-being, concentration and attentiveness, sleeping routine, their way of coping with life after TBI and other activities that they performed daily. The outcome of the study indicates that 51% of the subjects were suffering from a severe chronic fatigue. Some number of subjects had a mild chronic fatigue whereas a few subjects were not at all suffering from it. As much as 65% of the post TBI patients were deficient in Vitamin D and they were the more likely sufferers of fatigue. The team also witnessed that the secretion of sex and growth hormones in the fatigued subjects was pretty less than normal. But, the evidence that the abnormal secretion of these hormones is responsible for causing chronic fatigue was not found.

The head of the team, Dr. Schnieders, said that it is still very early to confirm whether Vitamin D deficiency is the root cause of chronic fatigue among TBI patients that happens in the later phases of their lives and is not yet proven. Now it is essential that further research is carried out to confirm if fatigue is caused by the deficiency of Vitamin D in the body. The levels of Vitamin D in the body are maintained by a proper diet and sunshine. If it is proved, the intake of Vitamin D would surely reduce the fatigue in TBI patients at least to some extent
