Traumatic Brain Injuries can have adverse effects on children affected with it. The mild form of TBI can have some minor and short-term consequences on children whereas the severe head injuries may give rise to some long-lasting problems in children. The functioning of the brain in small children is in the development stage and when they receive a head blow, the behavior and cognition of the brain can be disturbed as a result of the trauma. Some common effects of traumatic brain injury in children that have been observed are listed below:
- Children tend to get agitated after suffering from a traumatic brain injury. In some cases, the agitation may increase to a level where children get aggressive and throw things around.
- A minor TBI can lead to post concussion syndrome among children which causes lack of concentration, abstract thinking and difficulty in remembering even small things in them. This affects their academic performance in school along with other activities like playing.
- Children suffering from TBI can feel lazy to do any activity and may experience dizziness.
- The sleeping habits or patterns of children might change after head injury. The patients may sleep for longer hours than they used to before the trauma. It can also happen that they may not get sleep at all.
- The executive processing functions of the brain are also affected in some cases. These functions include skills such as solving problems, recognition of priorities, organization and planning.
- The learning process in children having TBI is also affected. Children cannot remember new information that they read or hear.
- There can also be problems regarding behavior in TBI affected children. They may behave abnormally in social surroundings. Also, a feeling of loneliness and depression can be witnessed in them.
Some effects of TBI on children stay for a short span of time and lessen or die away as time progresses. But there are some problems that are long lasting and can stay for the whole of life.
